Most students prepare for exams the same way: re-read their notes, highlight the textbook, and hope something sticks. That approach produces mediocre results because it creates a feeling of familiarity without building the retrieval ability you need in the exam room.

Skip the question and come back. Forcing retrieval when you are anxious worsens performance. Moving to other questions often allows the blocked memory to surface on its own. Take two slow breaths before re-reading the question -- it reduces working memory load from anxiety and gives retrieval pathways more processing time.
