AP Biology Study Schedule

The 8-week plan for AP Bio. Front-loads Units 3 and 6 (the two highest-weight units), builds in data analysis practice (a common weak spot), and hits two full-length practice exams.

Exam format reminder: 60 MCQs (90 min) plus 6 FRQs (90 min). Two long FRQs (worth about 8-10 points each) and four short FRQs (worth 4 points each). Section 1 and 2 are each 50% of your score.

The 8-week schedule

WeekFocusWhat to actually do
Week 1
Mar 16
Units 1 & 2: Chemistry of Life + Cell StructureWater properties, macromolecules, membranes, transport, organelles. 20 released MCQs. Focus on identifying molecule types from structural diagrams.
Week 2
Mar 23
Unit 3: Cellular EnergeticsEnzymes, photosynthesis (light-dependent and Calvin cycle), cellular respiration (glycolysis, Krebs, ETC), fermentation. Highest-weight unit at 12-16%. 25 problems + 1 FRQ.
Week 3
Mar 30
Units 4 & 5: Cell Communication + Cell CycleSignal transduction, feedback loops, mitosis, meiosis, cell cycle checkpoints. Common short FRQ topic. 2 timed FRQs.
Week 4
Apr 6
Unit 5 & 6: Heredity + Gene ExpressionMendelian genetics, Punnett squares, DNA structure, replication, transcription, translation, mutations, gene regulation. Unit 6 is 12-16% (second highest). 2 FRQs.
Week 5
Apr 13
Units 7 & 8: Natural Selection + EcologyHardy-Weinberg, evolution mechanisms, phylogenetic trees, population ecology, ecosystems, biodiversity. Take Practice Exam 1 at end of week under real timing.
Week 6
Apr 20
Data analysis intensiveAP Bio is heavily data-driven. Practice reading experimental graphs, error bars, controls, chi-square problems, standard error. Redo missed MCQs from Practice Exam 1. 1 grid-in every session.
Week 7
Apr 27
Practice Exam 2 + weak-area targetingTake Practice Exam 2. Compare score to week 5. Target every weak unit. 3 FRQs per session with focus on the long FRQ format.
Week 8
May 4
Sharpen & restShort spaced review across all 8 units. 2 FRQs per day Mon-Thu. Fri-Sun: flashcards, formula sheet, sleep. May 12 is exam day.

Unit weights on the AP Biology exam

The College Board publishes approximate weight ranges. Weight your study time accordingly.

What most AP Bio students get wrong

They over-study memorizable content (photosynthesis diagrams) and under-study experimental design. Half the exam requires you to interpret data, not recall facts. Reserve at least one full week for graph reading and experimental analysis.

They skip the AP Bio equations sheet. You get one on exam day. It has statistical formulas (chi-square, standard error), Hardy-Weinberg, and rate calculations. Practice with it in front of you every session from week 3 on.

They wait too long to write long FRQs. The two long FRQs are worth roughly half your FRQ points. Practice at least one per week starting week 4.
