Spaced repetition vs cramming: the research breakdown

Every student has been told "don't cram." Almost nobody is told what to do instead, or why. This is the cited research on how spaced repetition actually compares to cramming, drawn from 140 years of memory science and a definitive 2006 meta-analysis.

The one-line answer: For anything you will be tested on more than 24 hours from now, spaced repetition produces roughly twice the retention of cramming for the same total study time (Cepeda et al., 2006). The effect grows the further out the test is.

The two study methods, defined precisely

Before comparing them, define them cleanly. Loose definitions are why most study-tip articles talk past each other.

Cramming (massed practice)

  • When: Session immediately before the test.
  • Repetitions: Multiple exposures to the same material, back-to-back, with little to no gap.
  • Total time: Often 3-8 hours in one sitting.
  • Feels: Productive, urgent, hard.
  • Retention curve: Sharp rise, sharp fall after the test.

Same total time, split into sessions across days

  • When: Multiple sessions across days or weeks.
  • Repetitions: The same material reviewed 3+ times with 24+ hour gaps between reviews.
  • Total time: Same total (or less) as cramming, spread out.
  • Feels: Slower, easier per session, less "productive".
  • Retention curve: Flatter rise, much slower decay.

The forgetting curve, and why spacing works

The comparison starts with Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885. Working with nonsense syllables as a solo subject, Ebbinghaus mapped how quickly he forgot memorized lists over time. The result: memory decays exponentially, with the steepest loss in the first 24 hours.

The insight from Ebbinghaus was not just that we forget quickly. It was that each review resets the forgetting curve. And after each review, the curve gets flatter, meaning the same amount of forgetting takes longer. This is why four spaced reviews outperform one long study session, even when the total time is identical.

The definitive study: Cepeda et al. (2006)

The best evidence on this question is a meta-analysis of 317 experiments spanning nearly a century of memory research. Cepeda, Pashler, Vul, Wixted, and Rohrer combined the results in Psychological Bulletin. Their findings:

Spaced practice beat massed practice in 259 of 271 comparisons

Across the studies included, distributed practice produced better recall than massed practice in 96% of the direct comparisons. The remaining 4% showed no significant difference. There were zero comparisons where massed practice significantly outperformed distributed practice at any retention interval beyond 24 hours.

The effect size grows as the retention interval grows

On tests taken minutes after study, cramming can look similar to spacing. On tests taken 24 hours later, spacing pulls ahead. On tests taken 1 week later, spacing produces roughly 2x the recall. On tests taken 1 month later, the gap is bigger still. If the test is soon, the advantage is small. If the test is far, the advantage is decisive.

The optimal review gap scales with the target retention interval

The follow-up paper worked out the optimal spacing: the gap between reviews should be roughly 10-20% of the time until you need the material. For a test in 30 days, review every 3-6 days. For a test in 1 year, review every 5-9 weeks.

Dunlosky's team reviewed the entire evidence base on 10 popular study techniques for a comprehensive report commissioned by the American Psychological Society. Only spaced practice and practice testing (self-quizzing) earned a "high utility" rating. Highlighting, rereading, and summarization were rated "low utility."

Where cramming wins (a small window)

Being honest: cramming does have a narrow window where it works. If the test is in the next 24 hours and you have not studied the material at all, cramming will produce a higher score on that test than not studying. The comparison here is not cramming vs nothing. It is cramming vs distributed practice with the same total study time.

Cramming also produces a stronger illusion of learning, which is why students underestimate spaced practice. When you cram, the material feels fluent because you just read it. That fluency is confused with mastery. Bjork and Bjork (2011) called this the "illusion of competence." A test the next morning validates the illusion. A cumulative final three weeks later destroys it.

How to actually implement spaced repetition

The research is clear. The implementation is where students fall off. Three practical rules:

Rule 1: The first review is the most important

Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve is steepest in the first 24 hours. Review the material once the day after you first learned it. Not the same day. Not two days later. The day after.

Rule 2: Each review should follow the 10-20% rule

The gap to the next review should be 10-20% of the time until the test. If the test is in 30 days: next review at day 4, then day 10, then day 20. If the test is in a week: next review at day 2, then day 4, then day 6.

Rule 3: Review by testing, not by rereading

The distinction between "review" and "test yourself" matters. Rereading produces the illusion of competence. Retrieval — closing the book and forcing yourself to recall — produces actual learning. Combine spaced practice with self-testing and you get the two "high utility" techniques from Dunlosky (2013) in the same session.

What this means for your next study session

If your exam is next week and you have not started, the highest-return move is not more hours today. It is splitting the same total hours across five days, and using at least half of that time for self-testing rather than rereading. The evidence is not subtle. You will retain more of it, you will feel less overwhelmed doing it, and you will still be able to recall it during the final exam three weeks after the midterm.
