How to use Cornell Notes effectively

Cornell Notes work because the cue column on the left is not just for labels — it is where you write the question that your notes on the right answer. After class, cover the right column and use those cue questions to test yourself from memory.

The five steps

1. Record — During class, take notes in the right column. Keep them concise.
2. Reduce — Within 24 hours, write cue questions in the left column.
3. Recite — Cover the notes column. Answer each cue from memory.
4. Reflect — Think about what the material means and how it connects to what you already know.
5. Review — Spend 10 minutes reviewing your notes each week until the exam.

When Cornell Notes work best

Cornell Notes are strongest for lecture-heavy classes where you capture information quickly and review later — history, biology, psychology, economics. For math, use a modified version: worked examples in the notes column, conceptual questions in the cue column.
