What this calculator actually does

Cumulative GPA is the average grade-point earned across every course you have ever taken, weighted by credits. When you add a new semester, the cumulative GPA shifts based on how the new courses compare to your prior average. This calculator does the math: it takes your prior cumulative GPA times prior credits to get prior grade points, adds this semester's grade points, then divides by the new total credit count.

Why this is more useful than a standard GPA calculator

A standard GPA calculator only gives you the GPA for the courses you enter. It does not tell you what those courses do to your overall standing. The cumulative version shows the new running total, the delta, and the GPA for the current semester in isolation. That is the data you need before making decisions about course load, dropping a class, or how hard to push this semester.

How much does one semester move your cumulative GPA

This is the question students ask when they have just taken a rough exam. The answer is mostly about credit ratios. With 30 prior credits at a 3.5 GPA, a 15-credit semester at 4.0 brings your cumulative to roughly 3.67. With 90 prior credits at the same 3.5, the same 4.0 semester brings you to about 3.57. Junior and senior year semesters move the cumulative less than freshman year semesters. That is also why grade-recovery plans matter more the earlier they start.

What if you are pre-med or pre-law

Professional schools usually want a cumulative GPA above 3.5, often above 3.7 at competitive programs. Pre-med applicants also report a science GPA (BCPM: biology, chemistry, physics, math) which is computed separately. If you are in a track where every science grade matters double, plug the science courses into this calculator separately to see your BCPM running average alongside your overall.

What if you are trying to recover from a bad semester

The math is unforgiving in one direction (small drops are hard to climb back from when you have many credits) and forgiving in another (a clean semester at 4.0 after a 2.5 semester pulls you up faster than students usually expect, if it happens early enough). Use this calculator to model a few realistic next semesters and decide whether retaking a course (if your school allows replacement) is higher leverage than continuing forward.

When to use this calculator

Before registering for next semester to estimate the GPA impact of a heavier or lighter load. At midterms when you have early grades and want to project the semester. At the end of a semester to update your cumulative before the official transcript posts. Before applying to graduate or professional programs to know exactly what your application will show.
