Enter the courses you took this term, the letter grade for each, and the credits. Your semester GPA computes in real time. No signup, no limits, no ads.
Semester GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale. Each letter grade converts to grade points: A is 4.0, A-minus is 3.7, B-plus is 3.3, B is 3.0, and so on down to F at 0.0. For each course, multiply the grade points by the number of credits. Sum across all courses. Divide by total credits. That is your semester GPA.
Most colleges use this exact scale. Some use slight variations (A-plus counted as 4.0 in many schools, 4.3 in others). This calculator uses the most widely accepted version: A and A-plus both count as 4.0, since most schools cap the GPA at 4.0 for non-weighted calculations.
Honors lists. Dean's list. Probation policies. Scholarship renewals. Many academic standing decisions are made on the semester GPA specifically, not the cumulative. A 3.4 cumulative student with a 3.7 fall semester probably makes Dean's List. The same 3.4 cumulative student with a 3.0 fall semester does not. Track this per term, not just at the end of the year.
Semester GPA recovery is the fastest GPA-recovery mechanism. A clean 4.0 semester pulls a low cumulative up faster than working through a couple of grade-replacement options. The math: if your cumulative is 2.7 with 30 credits and you post a 4.0 semester at 15 credits, your new cumulative is around 3.13. That is a 0.43 jump from a single semester.
The exact courses you need to focus on depend on credits. If you have a 4-credit Chemistry, a 4-credit Calc II, a 3-credit English, and a 3-credit elective, those credit weights matter. A B-plus in the 4-credit Chem moves your semester GPA more than an A-minus in the 3-credit elective. Use the calculator to model scenarios: enter target grades and see whether the math reaches your threshold.
This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale, which is what most high schools use as a baseline. If your high school weights AP, IB, or honors courses with bonus points, switch to the weighted GPA calculator instead, which has the bonus built in.
Run a forecast before registration. Plug in projected grades (based on past performance in similar courses) for each class you are considering. The calculator gives you a realistic semester GPA target. This is how upperclassmen avoid overloading a tough semester or undershooting an easy one.
