How weighted GPA works

The standard unweighted GPA scale runs 0 to 4.0: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder courses. The most common bonus: +1.0 for AP and IB (so an A in AP US History is 5.0), and +0.5 for honors (an A in Honors English is 4.5). This calculator uses that scale.

To compute, the calculator multiplies each course's weighted grade points by its credits, sums those across all courses, and divides by total credits. The unweighted column does the same with the standard 4.0 scale, ignoring AP and honors bonuses.

What counts as a good weighted GPA

For high school, anything above 4.0 means the student is taking honors or AP coursework and doing well in it. Selective colleges typically see admitted students with weighted GPAs in the 4.0 to 4.5 range, and the most competitive admit pools see 4.5 to 5.0. The unweighted GPA still matters: a 3.7 or higher is the threshold most admissions counselors use for "strong academic profile."

Why colleges still look at unweighted

Every high school weights differently. Some give +1.0 for AP, others give +0.5. Some have no honors track at all. Colleges recalculate on their own scales to compare students fairly. That is why the unweighted GPA is often what admissions officers see first. They look separately at course rigor: how many APs, how many honors, which subjects, did the student take the hardest available option.

If you want a higher weighted GPA

Three levers: take more AP or honors courses, do better in the ones you are already in, and stop dropping classes mid-semester (which often leaves a W on the transcript and pulls weighted GPA down through reduced credit counts). The order of leverage depends on where you are: if you have zero APs and a 3.5 unweighted, adding one AP next semester moves your weighted GPA more than going from a B+ to an A- in pre-calc.

When to use this calculator

Use it at the end of every semester to know exactly where you stand. Use it before signing up for next semester's classes to see what the GPA impact would be of taking one more AP versus a standard course. Use it before submitting college applications to confirm what your transcript actually says.
