Finding 01

Sessions got shorter and later

Median session length across the sample dropped to 47 minutes, down from about 52 minutes in the 2024 baseline. Sessions also shifted later in the day. In 2024 the modal start hour was 7 pm. In 2026 it is 9 pm, and a meaningful tail of study happens between 11 pm and 2 am.

The likeliest explanation is not what students say (busy schedules, jobs, roommates). It is what the data shows: students break long sessions into multiple shorter ones across the evening, with a phone check between each. The Pomodoro-style pattern that used to be prescriptive is now default behavior, whether or not students are consciously using a timer.

Bar note: The "12 am to 3 am" figure appears at 0% because the sample rounds under 1%. In practice it is closer to 0.4%. Late-night studying is smaller than students believe, and much smaller than the internet suggests.

Finding 02

AI is now the most-used study companion

Across the sample, 78% of students used an AI tool (ChatGPT, Claude, StudyEdge AI, or built-in course AI) at least once during a study session in the trailing 30 days. Among that group, the most common single use case is not writing an essay. It is asking a follow-up question about an example already in the notes.

This matters because it reframes the AI-in-education debate. The visible use case (drafting) is what schools police. The hidden use case (personalized explanation of concepts students already have in front of them) is where AI has quietly become the default tutor for millions of students who cannot afford a human one.

These are the courses that break the schedule

Every degree has a course that generates disproportionate emergency studying. The report tracked which courses produced the highest share of "crisis sessions" — sessions started within 72 hours of an exam, over 90 minutes long, and marked as low prior preparation. The pattern is remarkably consistent across schools.

The gap between intended and actual study

Students planned an average of 14.6 hours of studying per week. They completed an average of 8.9 hours. That is a 39% gap — a plan that consistently misfires by more than a third of its scope.

The gap does not close during exam weeks. It widens. Students plan roughly 22 hours in the seven days before a major exam and complete 12.5. The last 24 hours before an exam absorb the missed sessions in one compressed burst, which is where cramming behavior peaks.

Spaced practice works, and almost nobody uses it

Students who reviewed each concept at least three times across separate days, with at least 24 hours between reviews, scored an average of 11 percentage points higher on exams than students who studied the same total time in massed blocks. The effect held across subjects. It is one of the largest, most consistent findings in the report.

The uncomfortable other half of the finding: only 14% of tracked study behavior meets the definition of true spaced practice. The overwhelming majority is single-session or single-day, even when a review schedule is available to the student.

The gap is not knowledge — most students have read about spaced repetition. It is scheduling. When study plans are not built for them and reinforced by reminders, most students revert to studying the topic that feels most urgent tonight.

Finding 06

The flashcard renaissance is real, but different

Flashcard usage rose 34% year over year. The mechanism changed. In 2024, most cards were built by hand in a dedicated app (Anki, Quizlet). In 2026, the majority of cards are AI-generated from notes or PDFs and reviewed inside another tool: a study session, a quiz, or a chat. The standalone flashcard app is losing share to integrated study environments.

Cards that are AI-generated then reviewed alongside quizzes and active recall showed 2.3x the completion rate of cards created and reviewed in a standalone flashcard app. Effort matters less than integration.

Methodology

Data was drawn from anonymized behavioral logs of consented U.S. college student users of StudyEdge AI during the 2025-08 to 2026-06 academic year, supplemented with a 2,180-respondent survey conducted in April 2026. All personally identifying data was removed before analysis. Session data was normalized to remove clearly automated or interrupted sessions (under 4 minutes) and outliers over 6 hours in length.

The sample is not intended to represent every U.S. college student. It is intended to represent the population of students who use a study app at least once per month, which is a large and growing share. Where the report generalizes, it says so explicitly.
