The honest answer

MIT publishes test score ranges but not GPA explicitly. They emphasize that they look at coursework rigor, performance in STEM specifically, and the depth of intellectual engagement outside the classroom. A near-perfect transcript is a baseline; what gets students in beyond that is the rest of the application.

What the admit data actually shows

MIT specifically wants to see strong performance in math and science at the maximum rigor your high school offers. Calculus through BC, a year of physics including AP or beyond, and chemistry are typical. A 3.9 in maximum-rigor STEM beats a 4.0 with light coursework.

What "competitive" means in practice

The 25th-75th percentile GPA range published by MIT reflects the middle half of admitted students. The 25th percentile is not a floor; some admitted students sit below it.
